Dr. Kleinmann will advance CH2M HILL’s mine reclamation capabilities

CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, announced today that Bob Kleinmann, Ph.D., is joining the firm as a senior mining technologist. Dr. Kleinmann will be transitioning into an advisory role for the mining team’s top ten programs, supporting business development activities, and helping define mining technology best practices.

Trained as an environmental geologist, Dr. Kleinmann started his career at the Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines, in the Environmental Technology Division. He initiated the Acid Mine Drainage research group, which rapidly became the nation's lead research group in this area. Less than four years after joining the Bureau, Dr. Kleinmann was given responsibility for all of the environmental research being conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Center.

After 16 years at the Bureau, he joined the U.S. Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) where he worked as a division director for the Geosciences group and the Environmental Management group. His responsibilities included supervising the in-house environmental and geological research to develop technology to control power plant emissions, to treat water contaminated by natural gas extraction, and to geologically sequester carbon dioxide. He also contributed to the management of the overall in-house research program. He worked for NETL from 1996 to 2011.

“I’m extremely pleased that Bob has decided to join CH2M HILL. He is a nationally recognized expert, and he brings a wealth of knowledge on remediation of acid rock drainage and mine closure,” says Dr. John Mogge, Technology, Practices, and Design Director. “Dr. Kleinmann’s acceptance completes the development of our core mining leadership team and is a great addition to our growing mining staff and enterprise-wide mining community of practice.”

Dr. Kleinmann is particularly well known for his groundbreaking research and innovative contributions in controlling acid mine drainage. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 publications on mining environmental technology. Since 1996, Dr. Kleinmann has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal, Mine Water and the Environment, for the International Mine Water Association (IMWA). He is vice-president of IMWA and past-president of the American Society of Mining and Reclamation. He wrote the coal mining portions of the free on-line Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide, and has edited six books, including one on predicting water quality at surface coal mines and one titled Acidic Pit Lakes, which will be published by Springer later this year.

Dr. Kleinmann holds a Ph.D. and MA in geology, with a specialty in water resources, from Princeton University and a BS in geology from Penn State.

He will work out of the firm’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office.
