Sustainability was the focus of the EWeek presentation given by CH2M HILL volunteers from Kalamazoo, Michigan, at a middle school in Goshen, Indiana. Through a variety of activities, students learned about sustainability and the role that engineers play in society. The presentation featured a video fly-through of Masdar City, the world's first carbon-neutral city being built in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In celebration of Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, CH2M HILL employees in Savannah, Georgia, teamed with the City's Water and Sewer Bureau and Environmental Affairs Department to lead 100 elementary and middle school girls on a tour of the recently completed Crossroads Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tour highlighted the role of female engineers on this local project. While the girls were touring the plant, other CH2M HILL engineers stayed back at school with the boys and held a car design-build competition...

Employees in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, gave an EWeek presentation and conducted a bridge building activity for two 5th grade classes. The presentation included a short history of engineering and famous engineers, and also introduced the kids to bridge shapes, bridge materials, and bridge design concepts. With the recent collapse of the 35W Bridge in Minneapolis, there was special interest in bridges this year, and the staff presented an activity for the kids that focused on this interest...

CH2M HILL's Electronics and Advanced Technology President teamed with his son, also an engineer, on EWeek events at two elementary schools in Portland, Oregon. The two engineers gave a presentation about engineers - who they are, what they do, and what specifically CH2M HILL engineers are doing in Portland and around the world. After the presentation, the students were given toothpicks and marshmallows and tasked with building the strongest and tallest structure...

The San Antonio, Texas, office of CH2M HILL teamed with the City of San Antonio (COSA) Stormwater Engineering Department to host 11 high school seniors who participated in the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) Engineer-for-a-Day Program. During the day, students and CH2M HILL mentors attended the TSPE Proclamation Breakfast, a tour of the Pioneer Flour Mills and the new City of San Antonio engineering offices, the Society of American Military Engineers EWeek luncheon, and a tour of the CH2M HILL Riverwalk expansion project with the San Antonio River Authority...

In celebration of National Engineering Month in Canada, CH2M HILL's Toronto office invited Grade 12 students from an Introduction to Engineering course to the office for an educational open house. The program included the importance of health and safety, an introductory presentation on CH2M HILL, an office tour, a demonstration of three-dimensional design (allowing students to do a virtual walkthrough of a facility), a Q & A session with a panel of CH2M HILL engineers...

As part of the Introduce a Girl to Engineering effort, an EWeek team from CH2M HILL's Washington, D.C. office visited Junior and Brownie Girl Scout troops in Round Hill, Virginia. After giving a presentation focused on engineering careers and water filtration, the volunteers broke the girls into teams to complete the Clean It Up! project to explore how water filtration systems work. Each team prepared its own filtration system using a 2-liter plastic bottle and various household filtration materials...
