Engineers lead students on a "behind the scenes" engineering tour of their school
Sustainability was the focus of the EWeek presentation given by CH2M HILL volunteers from Kalamazoo, Michigan, at a middle school in Goshen, Indiana. Through a variety of activities, students learned about sustainability and the role that engineers play in society. The presentation featured a video fly-through of Masdar City, the world's first carbon-neutral city being built in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Panama Canal expansion and local projects were also discussed. To bring the topic of engineering closer to home, engineers shared blueprints from a recent school addition and then led students on an engineering tour of the school, including the equipment room where students could see the school's water heaters, boilers, pumps, air compressors, and electrical panels all designed by engineers. Students used online tools to calculate their personal carbon footprints and then were given tips on how they could reduce their footprints by making more sustainable choices.
