Matt Alvarez accepts the George Warren Fuller Award from FSAWWA.
CH2M HILL is pleased to announce that Matt Alvarez, a client and senior technologist and professional engineer in CH2M HILL’s Miami office, has been awarded the esteemed George Warren Fuller Award for his exceptional service to the Florida Section of American Water Works Association (
FSAWWA). Alvarez was presented with the award on November 30, during the FSAWWA Fall Conference.
The Fuller Award is presented annually to distinguished members of AWWA for their service to the water supply field in commemoration of sound engineering skill, brilliant diplomatic talent, and constructive leadership. The Fuller Award is the highest honor for leadership given by AWWA, and Alvarez’s involvement with FSAWWA certainly deserves such recognition.
“It is an honor to receive the Fuller Award from such an incredible organization that I truly enjoy working with,” said Alvarez. “Not only does AWWA give worldwide water professionals the tools they need to be the best in the field, but they also work with their local communities towards water education and resource conservation. AWWA’s passion for working towards the common good, through fellowship, has been very rewarding and resulted in lasting relationships,” said Alvarez. “Additionally, past CH2M HILL Fuller awardees such as Bob Bailey and Wendy Nero were great mentors, helped me get involved, and were always an inspiration to lead at that level.”
Bob Bailey is President of CH2M HILL’s Water Business Group, based in Orlando. Wendy Nero is a CH2M HILL Vice President and Southwest Florida Area Manager, based in Tampa.
Alvarez has held a number of Board of Governors and officer positions with FSAWWA over the years, and his efforts have made a lasting positive impact. In 2008, he was Chair of the FSAWWA, and established the Florida 2030 Task Force with the mission to develop a vision for sustainable water infrastructure in Florida. The 2030 Task Force brought together statewide utility experts and state lawmakers to establish new water policies focusing on the need for regional and alternative water supplies, which resulted in an annual summit during which state lawmakers, utilities, and regulators would meet to discuss statewide water issues.
In addition, Alvarez established the first FSAWWA Headquarters with full-time staff to administer the $1.3M annual budget, improve member services, and serve as a resource to volunteers. He also developed and launched the annual FSAWWA Past Chairs Summit to bring together past leadership to review progress, mentor, and provide ideas from lessons-learned and experience. This summit is still being conducted yearly by the FSAWWA leadership.
Alvarez is highly qualified in the field of water quality and treatment and has served as a senior technologist and project principal for many surface water treatability studies, water reuse/irrigation augmentation studies, and alternative water supply and treatment projects throughout Florida. Alvarez also manages a number of strategic clients for the CH2M HILL Water Business Group in Florida.
