Firm developing program for nation’s 7th largest municipally owned electric utility
Faced with aging infrastructure along with energy marketplace volatility and unpredictability, Seattle City Light has turned to CH2M HILL to provide advanced asset management consulting services that will enable the utility to focus on cost- and risk-based decisions.
SCL recently awarded CH2M HILL a three-year, $4 million contract to create a lifecycle asset management program that will help the nation’s seventh largest municipally owned electric utility develop new business capabilities, improve energy efficiency, and manage risk while meeting increasing demand for clean, reliable, low-cost power.
The scope of work includes developing a comprehensive asset management plan that improves overall system reliability; developing and implementing an operations- and reliability-centered maintenance strategy that achieves service goals while minimizing lifecycle asset costs at acceptable levels of risk; and identifying and prioritizing capital asset expenditures for short- and long-term investments.
The project also includes the use of a panel of recognized global experts and industry leaders in asset management that includes representatives from ScottishPower (United Kingdom), United Utilities (United Kingdom), Jacksonville (Fla.) Electric Authority, the City of Columbus (Ohio) and Colorado Springs (Colo.) Utilities.
“Seattle City Light is a recognized industry leader in applying asset management principles,” says Elisa M. Speranza, president of CH2M HILL’s Operations & Maintenance Business Group. “We look forward to working with our partners to even further advance SCL’s asset management capabilities to better serve their customers and the community.”
SCL serves nearly 740,000 customers over a 130-square-mile area between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Its electrical infrastructure includes hydro-electric generation facilities, transmission lines, distribution substations, and overhead and underground distribution lines.
